This fall, Steve Carell and Emma Stone will face off as Riggs and King in Battle of the Sexes, a film directed by Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton, the married directorial team from Little Miss Sunshine.
That makes sense considering the nature of its story: Aging former tennis champ Bobby Riggs (Carell) had already felled Margaret Court, the world's reigning no. 1 female player, in a hyped May 1973 match. Now the first trailer has arrived, showcasing a playful and poignant drama that is about much more than a tennis match.
The tennis match was one of the most watched televised sporting events of all time and captured the cultural zeitgeist, sparking a global conversation about gender equality. The film is based on the real-life showdown between tennis champion and feminist icon Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and chauvinist has-been Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell).
Surprise! Simone Biles voted off 'Dancing with the Stars'
It's obvious that he's the worst dancer left, but that may not matter because his daddy/daughter dance was as sweet as could be. Carrie Ann felt like Simone danced with her soul; and Len said there was nothing about the dance that he didn't like.
It may be 40 years later, but this really couldn't have come at a better time!
The movie focuses on the lead-up to the battle, as well as the personal struggles of King and Riggs off court. In a nutshell, Battle of the Sexes shines the spotlight on something much greater than just a tennis match, but rather issues our society, sadly, still struggles with today almost 44 years later.
Fox Searchlight and Battle of the Sexes doesn't seem to believe it, and so far neither do we.
