Trump asked Comey to shut down Flynn investigation

Mr Comey reportedly wrote in the memo that the President told him Gen Flynn had done nothing wrong. "I hope you can let this go".

The Justice Department declined to comment. Flynn was forced to resign on February 13 amid questions over his contact with the Russian ambassador to the United States and discussions of USA sanctions.

The Times cites a memo that Comey wrote after his meeting with the president a day after Flynn resigned following revelations that, contrary to his initial statements, he had discussed Russian sanctions with the country's Ambassador Sergey Kislyak on a phone call in December of 2016.

The Times has not seen Comey's memo, but says one of the former Federal Bureau of Investigation boss's associates read excerpts of it to a reporter. The White House is disputing a report that President Donald Trump asked Comey to shut down an investigation into ousted national security adviser Michael Flynn. But Comey did not say anything to Trump about limiting the investigation, replying, "I agree he is a good guy".

Those same people told The Washington Post that the details of those notes were shared with a small group of people at the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department. Comey "was doing what we tell people to do", said this former official. "This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the President and Mr. Comey".

Speaking to CBS News' Nancy Cordes Tuesday evening, House Intelligence Committee Ranking Democrat Adam Schiff (D-California) said an investigation into whether the Trump administration is obstruction the Russian Federation probe is warranted.
