Mueller was chosen Wednesday by Assistant U.S. Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to take over the Russian Federation investigation after Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey, who had been conducting the probe.
Should Trump either pressure Rosenstein to fire Mueller or try to replace Rosenstein with someone who will, however, that would add even more reason to suggest Trump is deathly afraid of what Mueller's investigation will uncover.
"He was so respected during his time as FBI Director that President Obama asked Congress to allow Mr. Mueller to stay in office for an additional two years beyond the normal 10-year term limit", Lamborn said.
Asked about the early morning tweet, Sen. And Sen. Richard Burr, a North Carolina Republican who chairs the Senate intelligence committee, called the appointment a "good decision". With some exceptions, federal regulations provide that "the Special Counsel shall determine whether and to what extent to inform or consult with the Attorney General or others within the Department about the conduct of his or her duties and responsibilities".
The appointment seemed meant to quell mounting questions about the Justice Department's ability to independently oversee the investigation. Leaders of the Senate judiciary and intelligence committees have requested Federal Bureau of Investigation and White House records regarding the conversation between Trump and Comey, and Comey has received an invitation to address Congress to explain the matter.
The appointment of a special counsel comes during a tumultuous period for the White House: the sudden firing of FBI Director James Comey and a memo reportedly written by Comey detailing a request Trump allegedly made to Comey to drop the investigation into former national security adviser Mike Flynn.
The White House will likely face some tough questions on Wednesday during their daily press briefing with Sean Spicer.

Macron, in his third day in office, will host European Council President Donald Tusk at the Elysee Palace for a private dinner. Le Drian, also a strong supporter of Macron, had been considered for the prime minister's post, French media reported.
President Donald Trump is assailing the naming of a special counsel as "the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!" "I have made no such determination", Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said in a statement announcing the special counsel.
The Justice Department said Mueller has resigned from his job at a private law firm, WilmerHale, to take the job.
The president's daughter also works in the White House.

Interest was hardly limited to the U.S. No less a commentator than Russia's Vladimir Putin called the dramatic charges swirling around Trump evidence of "political schizophrenia spreading in the U.S".
Republican Jason Chaffetz of Utah, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said Mueller was a "great selection". The Justice Department announcement came after the market close.
