MedStar Washington Hospital Center Director of Trauma Dr. Jack Sava speaks during a news conference in Washington, Friday, June 16, 2017, about the condition of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of La. who was shot in Alexandria, Va., Wednesday, June 14, 2017, during a congressional baseball practice.
The bullet entered Scalise's left hip and tore across his pelvis, cracking bones and injuring organs and blood vessels.
As his colleagues played baseball in his honor Thursday evening, MedStar Washington Hospital Center medical gave an update on Rep.
Witnesses said the shooting would have been a "massacre" if not for the Capitol Police officers on duty as part of Scalise's security detail and the gunfight that ensued as local law enforcement arrived.
But Scalise, who has had two surgeries, will need additional operations and will be in the hospital for "a considerable period of time, presumably weeks", Sava said. But he stopped short of providing specifics of Scalise's internal injuries.
Sava said the level of sedation has been turned down to the point where Scalise can communicate with doctors and family members.
Alexandria police on Saturday reopened all the Del Ray neighborhood streets that had been closed since a gunman shot and injured people practicing for a congressional baseball game Wednesday.
Supporters of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., hold signs before the Congressional baseball game, Thursday, June 15, 2017, in Washington.
Cristiano Ronaldo faces accusations of $16.5 million in tax fraud in Spain
Ronaldo's lawyer said the four-time World Player of the Year was stunned by the accusations. This is far from the first case of alleged tax evasion involving football stars in Spain .
Nonetheless, Sava said, "We fully expect him to be able to walk" and "hopefully run". The list included Representatives Mo Brooks and Jeff Duncan, who were at the practice, and Representative Trent Franks, who was not, CBS said.
"So we all owe Steve a big, big thank you", the president said.
President Donald Trump says GOP Congressman Steve Scalise "took a bullet for all of us". They released photos of guns similar to the handgun and rifle that were used in the attack, which officials have said were purchased legally.
Sava also said Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner, who was also transported to the MedStar facility is now, "in good condition and she's in good spirits".
Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and critically injured and remained hospitalized.
Griner and Bailey have been hailed as heroes after taking down the shooter.
On Friday, Bailey was spotted back in the Capitol building, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.
