The sight was impressive even to Dwayne Banks, who has seen two decades worth of parades along Elm Avenue celebrating the end of slavery in Texas.

In the 20th Century recognition of Juneteenth declined, only to find a resurgence during the Civil Rights Movement.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. She said, "They could've chosen anyone, but they chose me".

Jo-Anne Saunders, executive director of the center, had been organizing the Juneteenth Festival held each year at Perry Park, but said she chose to go in a different direction this year.

"We want to kids to be engaged, and each facilitator is in charge of telling a story", she said.

The celebrations continue all weekend long here, so come on over, get a catfish, turkey leg, or refreshing pineapple freeze.

At the same time church members pay tribute to Father's Day, an honor shared by many men.

Paulk's post commander, Paulette Woods, added a sentiment shared by many of her generation: "Young folk don't know their history". This brings about a recognition of a struggle of a culture that had been oppressed for many, many years.
