Boeing unveils plans for new version of 737 Max

Boeing has a test version of the 737 MAX 9 on display at Le Bourget airport north of Paris, which hosts the air show.

Boeing is betting on the Max 10 to carve out sales and stem customer defections to Airbus's A321neo, which has racked up a considerable sales lead since being launched three years ago and still has room for upgrades. The new model will seat between 180 and 230 passengers.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Air Show, Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg explained the firm now has more than 4,000 737 airplanes in backlog. The MAX 10 will be introduced in the 2020 time frame.

"What [airlines] really wanted was seats and economics", said Delaney. We're fundamentally a 28 k engine, they're fundamentally a 34 k engine.

Airbus' model now holds a competitive edge with better sales and superior seating capacity.

The MAX 10 will be the most profitable single-aisle airplane, offering the lowest seat-mile cost ever in a commercial aircraft. Airbus specifies a range of 4,256 nautical miles for an A321neo equipped with Sharklet wingtips.

The order will be posted to the Boeing Orders & Deliveries website once finalized.
