After former FBI Director James Comey testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee, President Trump and his allies strained hard to claim victory.
In a tweet, the President also accused the U.S deputy attorney general of pursuing a "witch hunt".
Since Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself, Rosenstein is the Justice Department official directly responsible for matters relating to the investigation of Russian interference in the US presidential election of 2016, including any possible role played by people associated with Donald Trump's campaign. The Washington Post reported this week that Mueller is investigating whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice when he suggested Comey drop an FBI investigation into Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, as well as when he fired Comey.
Mueller took over the DOJ Russia probe after a chain of events set in motion by Trump, Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
But some outlets pointed out the statement was released after both The Washington Post and The New York Times reported Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating President Donald Trump for obstruction of justice.
In his tweet today, Trump seemingly confirmed the report and reiterated his charge linking his presidential campaign with Russian Federation is nothing but a political witch-hunt.
It was unclear whether the president's comment confirming he was under investigation was based on direct knowledge or media reports that Mueller is examining whether the president obstructed justice by firing Comey.
Trump's tweet comes less than a day after a unusual statement from a senior official in his administration.
Trump had expressed the same outrage when Mueller, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director from 2001 to 2013, was appointed last month by the US Department of Justice to probe Russian meddling. The Comey dismissal could become part of a widening investigation into whether the President tried to interfere with the ongoing Russian Federation probe.
Saudi says captures three Iranian Revolutionary Guards from boat
On Saturday, Iran accused the Saudi coastguard of killing one of its fishermen after two fishing boats may have strayed into Saudi waters.
Both actions seek documents Comey told the Senate he created earlier this year immediately after meetings and conversations with the president. The order also demands that records be kept on any foreign travel by members of Trump's transition team and presidential campaign.
"He's driving this", the White House official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss West Wing internal deliberations.
Rosenstein had written to Trump recommending Comey's firing.
While accusing the Clinton campaign and the Obama administration of indulging in illegal acts, Trump had said that "there was never a special counsel appointed to oversee the acts of his Democrat predecessors". The transition team was led by Vice President Mike Pence.
"Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?" he asked. And it's no secret that Trump has surrounded himself with people who make their money in ways that, at first glance, look pretty damn suspicious.
Although USA Today also noted that the tweet came shortly after a Washington Post report that Mueller's team is also investigating Trump son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner's business dealings.
"What I did is I was going to fire Comey".
He had likened the appointment of the special counsel with the "single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history".
