Trump says he is being investigated over Comey firing

Attention is focused on the question of obstruction simply because so much of Trump's campaign to deep-six the investigation has been conducted openly, at full volume. Trump later contradicted his own staff, saying on May 11 he had the Russian Federation issue in mind when he fired Comey.

Next week's witnesses include officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security, election officials, and an expert on election security.

Other presidents have managed to compartmentalize investigations and go about the business of governing, but Trump seems consumed by the Mueller probe.

Investigators in Mueller's office are set to interview Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Adm. Mike Rogers, a source familiar with the matter has told CNN.

The move was confirmed by a transition official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss post-election decisions.

Donald Trump is being investigated for potential obstruction of justice by the special counsel pursuing possible links of Russian interference in the 2016 US Presidential elections, reports The Washington Post.

"The message the president is sending through his tweets is that he believes the rule of law doesn't apply to him and that anyone who thinks otherwise will be fired". It wasn't clear whether he was basing his tweet on direct knowledge or on media reports. He took to Twitter, Thursday to rail on the prospects of being investigated for allegedly asking fired FBI Director James Comey to stop investigations into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The statement followed several stories in the past few days in The Washington Post and New York Times quoting unnamed sources on the direction of the probe, now in the hands of special counsel Robert Mueller III.

Trump's Friday morning tweet capped off 24 hours of comments on Twitter about the investigation, including several remarks about his opponent in the 2016 election. "I will defend the integrity of that investigation".

Trump's young presidency has been battered by allegations - under investigation both by Congress and the FBI - that Russian Federation interfered to sway the 2016 election in his favour, in possible collusion with Trump's campaign team.

President Donald Trump responded angrily to reports that he is under criminal investigation Thursday, deriding a "witch hunt" against him led by some "very bad" people. "Regulations way down, jobs and enthusiasm way up!"

Bipartisan calls for "unity" following the Wednesday morning shooting attack on Republican lawmakers practicing at a baseball field outside Washington DC have had no effect on the political warfare convulsing the American state and political establishment.

The president tweeted Friday, "The Fake News Media hates when I use what has turned out to be my very powerful Social Media - over 100 million people!"

The announcement that Mueller would be taking the reins came as Trump was meeting with members of his short-list.

The president has denied that he has any nefarious ties to Russian Federation and has also disputed that he's attempted to block the investigation into his campaign's possible role in Russia's election-related hacking. The order by the general counsel for his transition team casts a wide net on documents that could shed light on ties between Trump's presidential campaign and representatives of Russia's government.

Trump's tweet Friday reflected the first official confirmation that he is being investigated by the special counsel for the reasons he fired Comey last month.

The new allegations against Trump centre on his own admission that he fired Comey because of the Russian Federation investigation, and suggestions he asked several top intelligence officials for their help altering the inquiry's direction.
