The Post on Friday cited anonymous US officials who described USA intelligence intercepts of Ambassador Sergey Kislyak's descriptions of his meetings with Sessions, who was a Trump foreign policy adviser and now serves as attorney general. USA intelligence agencies have said Moscow meddled in the campaign, stealing thousands of emails and other documents from Democratic Party officials and releasing them publicly to embarrass Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and to assist Trump.
His son Donald Trump Jr and former campaign manager Paul Manafort are also scheduled to testify in front of Congress over a meeting with a Russian lawyer with ties to the Kremlin, Natalia Veselnitskaya, and alleged financial ties. Trump has said repeatedly that he did not collude with Russian officials and called accounts of the meetings between his campaign and Russian operatives a partisan attack by Democrats to avenge their loss in the election.
Trump in a tweet interpreted a statement by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) that Democrats, not Russian Federation, are responsible for the presidential election loss as an acknowledgment that no evidence of Trump team collusion with Russian Federation has been found. The public disclosures helped lead to a special prosecutor, Robert Mueller, taking over the investigation.
The Department of Justice says Sessions stands by his previous assertion he never had conversations with Russian officials about any type of interference with the election.
"And if he was going to recuse himself, he should have told me before he took the job and I would have picked somebody else", Mr Trump told the New York Times last Wednesday.
