Barabati likely to host T20I match

Another hectic and equally challenging home season lies ahead of Virat Kohli and Company as Team India will be playing a record 23 global matches in between September and December, this year.

According to media reports, a BCCI office-bearer, who didn't want to be officially quoted has revealed that India are set to play five ODIs and three T20 Internationals against Australia from September-end to mid-October.

Once the Aussies depart, their neighbours New Zealand will land on Indian soil to play three ODIs (Pune, Mumbai and Kanpur) followed by three T20 internationals (Delhi, Cuttack and Rajkot).

The series would be the concluding act of a limited-overs-heavy home season, with 11 ODIs, nine T20 Internationals and three Tests, during which the Barsapara Cricket Stadium near Guwahati will make its global debut, hosting a T20 worldwide against Australia.

Two new venues, Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala and Barsapara in Assam are in contention to host worldwide matches during the home season in which India are set to play a record 23 global matches at home between September and December.

The last time that the state capital staged an worldwide cricket match was when the Vivian Richards-led West Indies side played the last of the seven ODI match against India, on January 25, 1988 at the University Stadium here. The series against the Black Cap will start in mid-October and continue through the first week of November. Both are vying for Test matches. It will also play three T20 internationals in Hyderabad, Ranchi and Guwahati. On October 5, 2015, a T20 match was played between India and South Africa at Barabati stadium, but the match has left some bitter memories for OCA. "Most of the bigger centres want either a T20 worldwide or ODIs", a BCCI official told PTI.

Meanwhile, the Kerala Cricket Association responded that they are looking forward to it with great expectations.

Nagpur, which was under suspension may also be in contention to host a Test match. Sri Lanka will then wind up their tour with T20 matches at Kochi or the newly-accredited city of Thiruvanantpuram, Indore and Mumbai. "After more than 25 years, an worldwide match is coming to the city".

"One can be rest assured that atleast 16-18 venues will be covered during this phase", he concluded.
