Disney to rival Netflix and Amazon with own streaming service

The company also has a service called Disney Movies Anywhere for those who purchase physical copies of films or connect with partnered content providers.

The only thing surprising about Disney's decision to launch its own service is that the company didn't do so earlier. Disney, meanwhile, apparently acknowledged a changed world by announcing that it would end its streaming deal with Netflix (NFLX) and launch a streaming service of its own.in 2019.

Disney is saying "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Bye" to Netflix, but Hakuna Matata because it's coming out with its own streaming service.

But Disney's earnings last night finally made my trade a winner-and confirmed a number of points I raised.

"By ending the Netflix movie deal, Disney will keep movies such as Toy Story 4 and Frozen 2 for its own offering".

Though not directly subscription-based, Disney already has branded on-demand services for Disney XD, Disney Junior and Disney Channel.

Disney's move into streaming may be obvious but this shouldn't detract from how much of a shift it could be for the industry. Content on the new platform will come from the MLB, NHL, MLS, collegiate sports, and tennis' Grand Slam events, and will including roughly 10,000 sporting events annually. Noticeably missing from the lineup in the forthcoming ESPN OTT service are National Football League games.

However, not all fans are happy with the announcement.

The BAMTech transaction is subject to regulatory approval.

Iger added that one of the "beauties" of the Disney brand is that it has global recognition and a fan base that is worldwide. The new streaming services are a way to connect directly with consumers and take advantage of new viewing habits.
