Sri Lanka's foreign minister resigns

Minister of Foreign Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake resigned from his ministerial portfolio today after delivering a statement in Parliament.

Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Ravi Karunanayake. "I have never done anything wrong, and I resign with pride to create a new political culture in Sri Lanka and ensure good governance". Mr. Karunanayake has, however, said he was unaware of that contents of the apartment deal, and that his family handled it.

President Maithripala Sirisena's government has pledged to end the rampant corruption that affected the Indian Ocean island's previous government.

He however said that although he is resigning from the post he would continue to work as a back-bencher in Parliament.

Although Karunanayake has not been charged, opposition lawmakers had been calling for his resignation over conflict of interest and ethical issues.

Several SLFP ministers have demanded Karunanayake's resignation pending the presidential commission of inquiry probe into alleged Central Bank-Perpetual Treasuries bond scams.

According to reports, the suspected person is Arjun Aloysius, the son-in-law of Sri Lanka's former Central Bank chief Arjuna Mahendran.

At the Cabinet meeting several ministers voiced concern over the way the Attorney General's Department had questioned the Finance Minister on Aug 2.
