WhatsApp’s UPI payments feature has been spotted on the beta version of the Android app

We're not sure when WhatsApp plans on rolling out the feature, but as we have seen in the past, it does take a while for features from the beta to become mainstream, so we could be in for a wait.

Prior to a couple of months, reportedly WhatsApp was expected to receive the capability of UPI payment option. In an effort to simplify the process, UPI payments were introduced, but the adoption is still on a slow track. Well, the beta version of WhatsApp android app includes a hidden page for the preview of this UPI payment feature.

Interestingly, India's leading mobile wallet app Paytm, just a few weeks ago announced its decision to introduce a messaging feature on its platform as WhatsApp is introducing payments feature.

WhatsApp submitted a new update through the Google Play Beta Program: the version is 2.17.295.

According to a blog website WABetaInfo, Whatsapp is getting close to integrate bank-to-bank payments on its platform. But it looks as if we'll be able to send payments to one another via WhatsApp in a future update.

According to PTI report, Paytm has a bugger user base than WhatsApp so there are chances that it could outdo WhatsApp's popularity if the chat service goes live. A recent beta update even adds support for Android O's PiP feature when placing video calls.

WhatsApp is planning to deliver a unified service improvising the app with brilliant features starting from communication to pleasure, to payments and more. Some mobile messaging platforms like WeChat and Hike Messenger already support UPI-based payment services.

The newest feature from WhatsApp will not only benefit its 200-million active users in India, but will also give the government's Digital India drive a deeper push into the previous uncharted areas given the extreme popularity the app enjoys with the masses.

Currently, there are 50 banks who are members of UPI and out of them, 37 have developed their own UPI applications. As indicated by the PTI report, talks are on for both WhatsApp and Messenger and there are chances that WhatsApp will get the UPI mix before WhatsApp. For WhatsApp, the discussion for UPI integration has already commenced where as for Facebook discussions are on preliminary stage.
