She said Idea of India has to accommodate idea of Jammu & Kashmir. Fundamental rights are also part of the basic structure of the Indian Constitution, which can not be amended at all as the apex court has stated.

The normal life in Kashmir was affected by the strike called by separatists to protest "attempts" to abrogate Article 35-A, which grants special privileges to residents of Jammu and Kashmir. "So the message that Jammu and Kashmir is the crown of India should be reiterated". This provision was enacted by a Presidential Order in 1954. It allows the state legislature to define the "permanent residents" of the state, who would be entitled to own private properties in J&K. Article 35A was not introduced in isolation.

The J&K CM, while addressing reporters following the meet, said preservation of the Articles 370 and 35A is essential to maintain the faith of Kashmiris in the Indian political system.

He said abrogation of Article 35-A would be economically detrimental to the people of Jammu in particular, as youth would be deprived of jobs and the local business community would suffer due to influx of big business houses and traders from outside the state.

Kashmir is witnessing a political storm following the Attorney-General's suggestion to the Supreme Court in July "to have a larger debate on Article 35A" while it is being challenged by an NGO.

She claims that Mr Modi has fully assured her that his government will abide by the Agenda of Alliance and the special status of the state will not be tweaked in any way. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said that there is an improvement in the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Mehbooba met opposition National Conference president Farooq Abdullah earlier this week to seek the support of his party on the issue.
