Manchester United's Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku (L) shoots past West Ham United's English goalkeeper Joe Hart to score the opening goal during the English Premier League football match between Manchester United and West Ham United at Old Trafford in Manchester, north west England, on August 13, 2017.

Jose Mourinho says he is "keeping his feet on the ground" despite watching his Manchester United team thrash West Ham on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

West Ham were one of the 10 teams who got a point at Old Trafford last season, a statistic that cost United any chance of challenging Chelsea for the title.

Matic, meanwhile, was authoritative on his league debut for United following his recent departure from Chelsea, which looks increasingly like an ill-judged decision by the champions.

The key issue behind that disappointing home record was a lack of goals.

Still, there is an air of optimism around Old Trafford and not without reason. He was one of the best central defenders in the last decade of the Premier League, but he struggled. He could not have asked for a better start. It should mean Pogba, who is already benefiting from having a ball-winner like Matic alongside him, gets more room in central midfield.

The former Real Madrid boss is especially pleased with the capture of Matic from rivals Chelsea.

Against West Ham, he showed just why Mourinho was happy to splash £35 million on a 29-year-old. It was a lightning quick counterattack.

Samardzija has won three in a row after a 6-3 win versus the Arizona Diamondbacks with all three runs plated over 6.1 frames. Washington took three of four in the series and leads second-place Miami by 15 games in the NL East.

Javier Hernandez was there as the rot set in under David Moyes and he will make his Old Trafford return on Sunday after joining West Ham from Bayer Leverkusen in a £16 million deal. This was the kind of match United would have drawn last season, this season they ran riot. Mkhitaryan was hauled off following a dire display against Manchester City in September and it took months to regain Mourinho's trust.

By then, Mourinho will hope to have his final signing in the bag.

But there there was to be yet more Manchester misery for West Ham in the final three minutes as Mkhitaryan invited Martial to race behind the visitors' defence and calmly slot past the helplessly exposed Hart.

Rashford cut in from the left and unleashed a dipping 20-yarder that rebounded off the base of the far upright and back across goal, while Daley Blind sent an angled volley onto the roof of the net and Mkhitaryan had an effort ruled out for offside, too.

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic has reshaped his squad extensively since last season's 11th-place finish. "They have done a great job - and on time".

But United's other summer signing played no part in the game. The London Stadium hosting the World Athletics Championships means Bilic's side play United, Southampton and Newcastle away from home before Huddersfield's visit on Sep 11. Strikers can play phenomenally well, but if they don't score goals, the pressure's on them.

The Armenian is now a first-team regular, and the United manager expects Lindelof to settle and then excel for the team.
