In the wake of a campaign filled with anti-immigration rhetoric, President Trump Sept. 5 made good on a promise to end DACA, casting a shadow of uncertainty over the lives of many in Sonoma County.
The Obama-era program, known as DACA, has provided deportation relief and work permits to young, undocumented immigrants known as "Dreamers" who were brought to this country as children.
Garaufis, a Democratic appointee who previously expressed dismay about Trump's travel ban, is hearing a suit brought by a DACA recipient over the Obama administration's rules that is being refiled as a class action challenging Trump, and he has also been assigned a challenge from NY and other states.
In a statement following the Trump administration's announcement to rescind DACA, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccadro said, "Punting the issue to Congress, without any affirmative leadership to enact a legislative solution, amounts to a cowardly cop-out, placing the futures of these young women and men in serious jeopardy". She was in Milwaukee to speak at an event held by the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, and she says the unorthodox nature of the Trump presidency it's hard to compare him to past presidents or guess his next move.
We strongly urge Congress to pass legislation prior to March 2018 that will encode into law the protections and opportunities provided by DACA.

Both Democrats and Republicans have begun using this tactic; both sides have said they are forced to use this tactic because of an overreach by a president who is affiliated with the rival political party. Approximately 800,000 Dreamers have come forward and received DACA, which has allowed them to contribute more fully to their country as teachers, nurses, engineers, first responders, and service members. We're working on a plan for DACA.
"Let's say they don't meet those qualifications to get a green card, then maybe we do talk about deportation because people who don't meet the qualifications to get a green card, they don't get to come to America", Yang said.
