At least four people died in a crash on the M5 yesterday after a lorry ploughed through the central reservation onto the opposite carriageway.
"The motorway is now closed in both directions between J16 and J14 and emergency services are working at the scene".
Avon and Somerset Police said a "multi-agency operation" was launced at around 2.30pm.
Major crashes involving multiple fatalities are relatively uncommon in Britain but eight people died in August when two trucks and a minibus collided at the start of a busy bank holiday weekend.
Police said the motorway would remain closed in both directions overnight between junctions 16 and 14 as specialist officers worked through the night.
Several vehicles were involved, including a lorry.
He said three miles of traffic trapped between the junctions was still being cleared via one lane of the northbound carriageway. "One was absolutely destroyed and another had flipped over".
