Modi to dedicate Sardar Sarovar Dam to nation on his birthday

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Birthday To Be Celebrate As 'Seva Diwas' Nationwide

On his 67th birthday, PM Modi to dedicate Narmada Dam to nation

For Prime Minister Narendra Modi's grand welcome, Dabhoi in Gujarat is decorated with fluorescent lights.

Nehru had held the foundation-laying ceremony of the dam on April 5, 1961 at Narmada district's Kevadia Colony, where Modi will now dedicate its operation to the nation.

The Prime Minister will visit two of his favourite projects on his birthday - the Sardar Sarovar Dam Project and the Statue of Unity being built in the memory of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate the Sardar Sarovar Dam, constructed on the Narmada river, to the nation on his 67th birthday. "This project will benefit lakhs of farmers and help fulfil people's aspirations", PM Modi tweeted on Saturday. The increased height of the dam is likely to benefit participating states - Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The protesters led by Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar said the inhabitants of Narmada valley and their supporters would continue to challenge the unjustified submergence.

Earlier, on Wednesday evening the affected people from Dhar and Barwani districts had staged a "Chetavani Rally" outside the office of the Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA) in Bhopal. In 1996, the construction work was suspended following a stay by the Supreme Court.

Several villages, including low-level areas in Madhya Pradesh's Nisarpur town, were submerged on Friday after the water level near the Sardar Sarovar Dam rose to 128.3 metres.

"The Congress committed the sin of obstructing the project at every step".

After inaugurating the dam, PM Modi will travel to Sadhu Bet, where the Statue of Unity, an iconic statue and associated memorial complex for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, is now under construction.

He will lay the foundation stone for the National Tribal Freedom Fighters' Museum during the event.

"Looking forward to addressing a gathering of cooperatives, Sahakar Samemelan in Amreli tomorrow", the PM tweeted. While the BJP government has embarked on a Narmada Yatra since September 6 to celebrate the Centre's nod to close the dam's gates, the Congress blamed the successive BJP government for delaying the project completion.
