Tracking the tropics: Jose, Lee and Maria now eyeing land

The center also expects Jose to remain a hurricane while continuing north toward New England, but notes it likely be downgraded to a tropical storm before reaching the area.

Forecasters are watching Hurricane Jose, Tropical Storm Lee, and now Tropical Storm Maria as they churn their way through Atlantic waters. Regardless, the likelihood of impacts such as strong winds and at least minor storm surge is heightened.

Hurricane Jose is maintaining its strength as a Category 1 hurricane as it turns slightly north.

Hurricane watches have been issued for Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Montserrat.

According to the National Weather Service, tropical storm conditions are possible on Tuesday with a high temperature of 75 degrees. The center said the swells could cause "dangerous surf and rip current conditions".

The NHC thinks that Maria may be an extremely unsafe major hurricane (Cat 3+) as it approaches the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by late Tuesday into Wednesday.

Vázquez said forecasters measured wind gusts of up to 114 miles per hour in the small island of Culebra during Hurricane Irma, which didn't directly hit Puerto Rico.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Saturday that Lee had sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph) and was about 655 miles (1055 kilometers) west of the Cabo Verde Islands.

The main impacts will be rising seas, rough surf, rip current risk starting as early as this weekend, gusty winds, and tropical-like rain bands with an onshore wind with gusts near 40 to 60 miles per hour.

In addition to Maria, there were two other named storms in the Atlantic on Saturday.

Hurricane Jose is expected to impact CT next week.

By Tuesday, at approximately 2 p.m., Chief Meteorologist Bruce DePrest said Hurricane Jose will weaken as it nears the Eastern seaboard, but DePrest said its track will curve more to east toward Nantucket in the next 24 hours, or Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Maria is now expected to bring tropical storm conditions to parts of the Leeward Islands on Monday, with hurricane conditions possible by Monday night or Tuesday.
