According to a report by PTI, the UGC panel formed at the behest of Ministry of Human Resources (HRD), "Muslim" and "Hindu" word should be dropped from the names of the two universities to reflect their secular character. The recommendations were made in the audit report of AMU.
On Monday, the BHU and the AMU objected to the recent recommendation of the UGC panel to drop the words "Hindu" and "Muslim" from their names respectively and contradicted the panel's opinion that these words did not reflect the universities' secular character.
The committee suggested that Aligarh Muslim University be called Aligarh University or be named after its founder, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, the newspaper further reported. The same has been recommended for BHU.
The same logic was stated behind the suggestion to rename BHU. Currently, AMU itself shortlists the candidates for the post while for most other central universities, the screening is done by a government-appointed selection committee. The report, however, refrained from commenting on the institutions' minority status as the matter is sub-judice, reported Indian Express. As per terms and reference, the committee was assigned to conduct administrative, academic and research audit of the universities. The UGC panel also questioned the selection process of AMU's vice-chancellor.

While underlining the problem of "inbreeding" at the campus, the committee pointed out that the majority of its faculty members were former students of AMU.
The AMU auditing committee also branded the university as "feudal".
He added that both universities are traditional and should remain in that context.
Some other universities that are being audited by the panel are the prestigious Allahabad University, Central University of Jharkhand, Central University of Rajasthan, Central University of Jammu, Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya in Wardha, University of Tripura and Pondicherry University.
