A blow to Liverpool as a new club enters the race to sign Coutinho

Liverpool, however, strongly denied this version of events and insisted that their definitive stance that Coutinho would end the summer transfer window at Anfield had never changed.

They claim Coutinho was reluctant to play in the Champions League this season because it meant he would not be able to represent Barca in the same competition if he moved in January.

The Catalan giants bid a reported €100million for the Brazilian playmaker during the summer transfer window, and there are reports they will try again to seal a deal for him in January.

After missing out on Coutinho, Barcelona's sporting director Albert Soler claimed that the club had decided against a move for the player after Liverpool had ultimately demanded €200m (£183m).

Former Spurs forward Crooks urged Klopp to finally improve Liverpool's defence if the Reds want to keep Coutinho in their squad in the long-term.

Grau announced a predicted record revenue of €897m for this season, an increase of €189m on last season, partly thanks to Neymar's move to Paris Saint-Germain.

"We are [financially] prepared to sign Coutinho or any other player in January", Barca CEO Oscar Grau said at a news conference on Wednesday.

Coutinho has already fulfilled his part of the deal after he feature in the first two Champions League games of the campaign against Sevilla and Spartak Moscow, scoring against the Russian club in a 1-1 draw. "I believe that Barcelona and La Liga have to go hand in hand".
