He took aim at NBC, which made him a star on The Apprentice, after it reported he wanted to boost America's nuclear arsenal nearly tenfold.

United States television network NBC reported that Trump last summer told generals and security aides "he wanted what amounted to a almost tenfold increase in the U.S. nuclear arsenal".

Following a tweet refuting an NBC News story that Trump had asked his military advisors to increase America's nuclear arsenal tenfold and dismissing it as "pure fiction, made up to demean", Trump tweeted, "With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License?"

Tillerson said during a visit to Beijing two weeks ago that the administration was "probing" for channels of direct communication with Pyongyang to ratchet down tensions, but Trump quickly undercut the nation's top diplomat, saying on Twitter that it was a waste of time. "Bad for country!" Trump said.

The reporting cited three officials who were in the room for the comments.

"The president also said that NBC "made up a story that I wanted a 'tenfold" increase in our USA nuclear arsenal", which he described as "pure fiction, made up to demean".

NBC reported that Trump's reaction over the nuclear stockpile came after senior advisers showed him information charting its steady decline in numbers since the 1960s during the meeting at the Pentagon in July.

The president's and the government's power in this area could be limited anyway. Trump and the U.S. State Department denied the insult, though Tillerson himself did not.

Trump blasted the report as "Fake News". It's unclear how Trump's suggestion would work, as only television stations are subject to FCC licensing, not the networks.
