Fragile relations between the Rohingya villagers and their ethnic Rakhine Buddhist neighbours were shattered on Aug 25, when deadly attacks by Rohingya militants prompted a ferocious response from Myanmar's security forces.

Almost 200 medical teams in Bangladesh on Tuesday began one of the largest cholera vaccination campaigns in history, which involved the administration of some 900,000 doses to Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazaar and in the southeast of the country.

Around 11,000 Rohingyas crossed over into neighbouring Bangladesh in a single day in a fresh surge of refugees fleeing an ongoing military offensive in Myanmar's Rakhine state, the United Nations refugee agency said on Tuesday.

The violence has driven more than 500,000 Rohingya to neighboring Bangladesh since late August, where most live in refugee camps or out in the open.

Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina says her government will continue to support the Rohingya but Myanmar must take them back.

"In the light of the disproportionate use of force carried out by the security forces, the European Union and its member states will suspend invitations to the commander-in-chief of the Myanmar/Burma armed forces and senior military officers and review all practical defense cooperation", the agreement says, while calling on all sides to end violence immediately.

The report based on interviews with Rohingya who arrived in Bangladesh in the past month, said that "clearance operations" had begun before armed attacks on police posts on August 25 and included killings, torture and rape of children.
