And before the year ends, a voice call can be upgraded to a video call in an instant. Starting this week, owners of select Android smartphones will be able to make Duo calls right from their device's Android Phone, Contacts, and Android Messages apps.

Video calls can now be made straight from the Contacts, Phone, and Android Messages.

It may be noted that you and the recipient need to have Google Duo installed on one of the supported handsets (Pixel, Android One, and Nexus devices) to access video-calling directly from the phone. This is probably just another stability update to Play Store aimed at fixing bugs and errors which Android users often face with Play Store. Charlston's comments would indicate so, but knowing Google's history of shipping devices, it's not a certainty; perhaps call ahead if you're thinking about making a trip.

As always, Google is rolling out the new Play Store version (8.3.42) in stages and it might take a few days or weeks before it reaches your Android devices. If your carrier doesn't support ViLTE, don't worry, video calls still work, but you'll have to use the Google Duo app. The feature will have the video calls routed through the ViLTE service of the carrier.
