Detection in chickens means there is a risk for the virus to spread to humans through mosquito bites.

Richland County is reminding residents and business owners to protect themselves from mosquitoes, as health officials report an increase in the number of the pests infected with West Nile this year.

The new cases are in Hinds, Rankin, and Sunflower counties.

Counties with one case each are Bolivar, Clarke, Clay, Covington, DeSoto, Jones, Lauderdale, Leake, Leflore, Noxubee, Perry, Sunflower, Wilkinson and Yazoo. "Since 2015, 116 infections, including 10 infections this year, have been reported among people traveling to those areas becoming infected and carrying the infection back to LA County".

The primary way people get West Nile virus is through the bite of an infected mosquito. According to the World Health Organization, West Nile Fever symptoms include fever, headache, tiredness, body aches, nausea, vomiting and swollen lymph glands.

During regular tests in Oswego County last week, officials said they found EEE and West Nile Virus in pools in Hastings, Palermo and West Monroe.

Elderly people and individuals with suppressed immune systems are at risk for more serious illness.

In 2016, the state had 43 cases with two deaths.

Residents are advised to empty standing water on their property and wear long sleeves and repellents when outdoors.
