SA Girl Scouts react to girls being allowed into Boy Scouts

Many scouting organizations in other countries already allow both genders and use gender-free names such as Scouts Canada.

The Girl Scouts, founded in 1912, and the BSA are among several major youth organizations in the US experiencing sharp drops in membership in recent years.

The Boy Scouts of America says they made a decision to include girls to help busy families consolidate programs for their children.

In Australia both boys and girls have been able to join scouts since as far back as 1971.

Meanwhile, the Girl Scouts of America responded by issuing a statement reiterating their commitment to girls only.

Starting in the 2018 program year, families can choose to sign up their sons and daughters for Cub Scouts.

He also said that the principals of Scout Oath and Scout law are good ideals for anyone or any gender to live by.

He said the Girl Scouts have been for girls and the boy scouts for boys.

"Hopefully a lot of people will see that girl scouts has a program that has worked and will continue to work and will continue to develop girls of courage, confidence, character", said Adamson.

There are over 160 Boy Scout organizations worldwide, but the United States is one of the very few countries that does not offer a co-ed program.

Girl Scouts was created two years later in 1912. "I wouldn't say it's for everybody, because if you're going to join scouts there are things you have to do".

"It's a change and if there's a change to anything it's going to be different but we can get though this I'm not concerned and I know the boy scouts can handle it", Meyer says.

Andrew Miller became an Eagle Scout in 1979 and went on to be an adult leader and scout master in 1986.

"Overall I'm in favor", he said. "It doesn't say boys, it says young people".
