Bulls Suspend Bobby Portis Eight Games After Scuffle with Nikola Mirotic

Bulls' Nikola Mirotic out 4-6 weeks, Bobby Portis suspended eight games

With Mirotic out for the foreseeable future and Portis now suspended, attention will turn to rookie Lauri Markkanen at the power forward spot.

Bulls forward Bobby Portis has been suspended eight games for punching teammate Nikola Mirotic in practice Tuesday.

Portis and Mirotic were involved in a "serious altercation" at practice on Wednesday (AEDT) that eventually sent Mirotic to the hospital.

The team's statement also confirmed Mirotic suffered "a concussion and maxillary fractures" and will likely need surgery. "He's a good kid, but he made a mistake".

Before the incident, Mirotic was likely to be the Bulls' leading scorer in 2017-18, not because the career 10.8 points-per-game scorer was ready to elevate his game, but because the Bulls are that awful thanks to a series of bewildering trades ostensibly created to rebuild the franchise that instead yielded startlingly unimpressive hauls. Mirotic and Portis got into it during a competitive scrimmage, and it resulted in Portis throwing a punch. Mirotic was hospitalized after the incident.

Bulls general manager Gar Forman was at the practice and witnessed the altercation, league sources said.

Chicago opens its season against Toronto on Thursday.

Mirotic averaged 10.8 points over his first three seasons with Chicago. He signed a two-year deal with $12.5 million guaranteed to stay with the Bulls. He has averaged 10.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists over his 218-game National Basketball Association career.
