More men than women infected with oral human papillomavirus

1 in 9 American men are infected with oral HPV

But often, it doesn't usually present any symptoms until it causes more serious health issues, and now, there's no way of knowing if you'll develop cancer or other health problems if you're infected, says the CDC. Compared with women, men had a 5.4 percent greater predicted probability of high-risk oral HPV infection. Among males with ≥2 same-sex oral sex partners, high-risk HPV infection prevalence was 22.2%.

"One suspects that the HPV persists longer (means doesn't clear easily) among men and that might be causing increased prevalence", Deshmukh noted in an email. HPV 16 and 18 are the two most common cancer-causing types. Yet another possibility could be that, after a first infection, women develop greater resistance to subsequent infections. In the United States, HPV type 16 causes about half of cervical cancers, and types 16 and 18 together account for about 70% of cervical cancers. Some types are known as cancer-causing types. However, vaccination rates are low in males, and most people at risk of OPSCC may already have HPV exposure or are over 26 years old. The CDC recommends the vaccination for adolescents.

The researchers based their analysis on adults who took part in the country's National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey from 2011 to 2014, which involved oral rinse, penile, and vaginal swab specimens, along with survey questions.

All told, about 11.5% of study participants had an oral HPV infection. And infection is most likely for those who have had multiple oral sexual partners, are gay or bisexual, or who also have genital HPV infection, a team of US researchers found.

Roughly one in nine USA men have oral infections of the cancer-causing human papillomavirus (HPV), more than triple the infection rate for women, a new study suggests. It was most prevalent in men 50 to 69 years old, the team said.

"We do not have treatment for persistent infection or screening for many HPV-related cancers", Sturgis said by email.

"In contrast, the rates of oropharyngeal cancer among women have declined". The prevalence of HPV infection was 12.7 and 3.6%, respectively, among men and women who reported having same-sex partners.

Around one in nine men in the U.S. are infected with oral human papillomavirus (HPV), according to a study led by researchers at the University of Florida.

Almost 2 million men had high-risk HPV 16, a strain that causes most of the cancers, Deshmukh said.

Eva McGhee, an assistant professor at the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, said the work of Deshmukh and his co-authors may raise awareness of the dangers of HPV.

In addition to vaccination, condoms can also help lower the risk of HPV transmission, Deshmukh said. Studies that could shed more light should focus on acquisition of oral HPV from recent sexual partners, autoinoculation from anogenital sites, latent infections, and natural history of sexually active and inactive adults, she said.
