The inaugural session of the summit was attended by leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations' (Asean) dialogue partner countries which included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Donald Trump, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

PM Modi first held bilateral talks with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and discussed close cooperation to optimize the significant potential for further collaboration across a broad range of areas.

In an address at the annual gathering of leaders of the grouping in Manila, the Prime Minister said India was looking forward to a greater role by the East Asia Summit in the region.

Speaking at a press conference with Malaysian journalists at the end of the 31st ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings on Tuesday, Najib said ASEAN was increasingly valued by world and regional powers for its strategic importance and position.

Since 2005, the annual meeting of leaders of 18 countries, including 10 ASEAN member states and eight dialogue partners, serves as a forum for dialogue on broad strategic issues of relevance to East Asia as well as other regional and global issues, focusing on areas such as worldwide terrorism, energy, infectious diseases, sustainable development and poverty reduction.

"India, being a founding member of the East Asia Summit, is committed to strengthening the East Asia Summit and making it more effective for dealing with contemporary challenges", it added.

Noting that China and ASEAN announced plans to begin the next step of consultation on the text of a code of conduct in the South China Sea on Monday, Li said this shows a willingness from both China and ASEAN countries to properly handle differences through consultation and maintain peace and stability for the South China Sea. "Leaders are also expected to express their resolve to work together to reinforce the rules-based global order and multilateralism", the European Council said.

"We have individually strived very hard to fight terrorism and violent extremism".

Prime Minister Modi also talked about shared values and common destiny between India and ASEAN.

The ties between India and ASEAN have been on an upswing.

The Prime Minister also invited the ASEAN leaders for the 69th Republic Day.
