"It basically supports our whole work in The Salvation Army during the year", said Maj.

Major Greg Voeller from Salvation Army of Dane County kicked off the Red Kettle Campaign at Pick'n Save West, 2538 Ironwood Dr., on Friday Nov. 10, 2017. Volunteers are needed through Christmas eve. The goal for the 2017 campaign is to raise $525,000.

Some volunteers are able to help for just one shift, others are able to donate their time multiple times a week, like Roche, but Sadowy said every shift helps.

"My parents always wanted us to appreciate the sentiment that 'giving is better than receiving.' That's really become important in my life", Brantley said.

The Salvation Army's Angel Tree program makes sure that gifts are given to children and seniors who would not otherwise have presents under the tree on Christmas morning.

As of November 23, kettles will be set up Foodland, Sobeys and Harbax Home Hardware in Glace Bay and beginning December 1, kettles will also be placed at Atlantic Superstore, the Glace Bay liquor store and the Sterling Mall. Thousands of Salvation Army bell-ringers fan out across the country to ring bells and solicit donations to the iconic Red Kettles from holiday shoppers.
