Alcohol may have played role in death of Texas State student from Humble

Texas State Greek life suspended after fraternity pledge dies

I support Florida State University President John Thrasher's suspension of fraternity activities due to the recent death of a fraternity pledge. Ellis was a new member of Phi Kappa Psi.

According to The University Star, the college's student newspaper, Ellis had been initiated into the campus chapter of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity the previous night.

Ellis was an active student at Texas State University and lived on campus.

In September, Maxwell Gruver, a freshman at Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge, died after a fraternity drinking game, resulting in the establishment of a specific task force to review relevant campus policies.

Joanne Smith, the vice president for student affairs, will oversee the review and ultimately "propose recommendations for reinstating fraternity and sorority chapters that demonstrate a commitment to the core values of Texas State and the ideals established by their respective national organizations", Dr. Trauth said.

Earnest said it is too early in the investigation to confirm whether there was hazing or if anyone would be charged in connection with the death.

Friends found 20-year-old Matthew Ellis unresponsive at an apartment in San Marcos on Monday afternoon.

Phi Kappa Psi's Texas State chapter switched its Twitter account to private following Ellis' death, ABC San Antonio affiliate KSAT reported. "I think it's super unsafe and these things have happened before, so I think it's definitely the right and the smart move", said Texas State Senior Stephanie Cloyd.

Trauth added that she was suspending all Greek fraternity and sorority activities while the university completes a review of the Greek system.

Investigators believe alcohol could have played a part in Ellis' death although a full toxicology report is pending.
