Top police officer S.P. Vaid says Indian troops on Saturday cordoned off northern Hajin village on a tip that militants were hiding in civilian homes.
At least five militants and and India Air Force (IAF) personnel were killed in an ongoing encounter between ultras and security forces in Hajin area of north Kashmir's Bandipora district on Saturday.
The operation was on and further details were awaited, Kalia said. Six weapons were also recovered from the encounter site.
Vaid had recently said around 170 militants were gunned down by the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir this year.

A British government official, who asked not to be named, said on Friday it was "speculation" that the money would be paid. The deal was made with the then Shah of Iran and would have seen 1,750 tanks and other vehicles sold to Iran.
"One IAF GARUD soldier was martyred and one army soldier injured in the operation which continues", defence PRO Col Rajesh Kalia told Kashmir Reader.
Meanwhile, massive erupted in the adjoining areas where security forces had been already deployed to prevent people from disrupting the operation.
Militancy is a raging issue in J&K and on Wednesday two militants were arrested from the Kulgam district.
