Ramaphosa also won the most nominations in the Western Cape, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape, while Dlamini-Zuma was backed by the Free State and North West, and by a small majority in Mpumalanga who stated their preferences.

His main rival, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Zuma's ex-wife and favored candidate, was supported by 64 branches on the province, which include the nation's commercial center, Johannesburg, and Pretoria.

Dlamini Zuma and Ramaphosa received 123 and 117 branch nominations respectively. The new ANC leader will be the party's candidate in 2019 elections, when Zuma is due to end his second term as president.
