Stories Highlights will enable more customization and self-expression on profiles than ever before - whether sharing the best moments with your dog, your recent family vacation, or a collection of your silliest selfies. One example of this from Instagram is a user can show off the start of their season playing soccer, adding new Stories to their Highlight along the way, all the way up to the end of the season so they can show off the most noteworthy moments from start to finish.

Instagram just announced two major updates to its Stories feature that are going to change the way you use the app: Stories Archive and Stories Highlights. If you'd rather Instagram not save them, you can disable the feature by going into the Settings menu within Instagram (tapping the three dots in the top right), selecting Story Settings, and then toggling the Save to Archive button to the off position. "We encourage everyone to be thoughtful about interactions with wild animals and the environment to help avoid exploitation and to report any photos and videos you may see that may violate our community guidelines". "To edit or remove a highlight, just tap and hold that highlight on your profile".
The new update seeks to address those problems by allowing people to hold onto their stories once they are posted. As Instagram puts it on their blog, "To create a highlight, tap the "New" circle at the far left".
