"What makes this opportunity so unique is the vision of the leadership from President John Hitt, Provost Dale Whitaker and Director of Athletics Danny White", Heupel said in a news release.

Heupel's Mizzou offense is now ranked No. 7 in the nation, averaging 511.5 yards per game.

However, it's a move Heupel has to make, and you can't fault him for accepting his first head coaching position with a team that is 12-0 and heading to the Peach Bowl to take on Auburn. "I'm very excited to get a staff together and get to work with our wonderful student-athletes".

The former assistant coach at the University of Missouri has a treasure trove of offensive wisdom that should keep the Knights on course.

Like former coach Scott Frost, Heupel is a former college quarterback who won a national title at an elite program who went on to become an innovative offensive coordinator. That vision, the incredible campus, along with the recruiting base not only allows you to have immediate success but sustained success.

Before his time at Missouri, Heupel had stints as an assistant at Utah State, Oklahoma and Arizona.

Working with Heupel, Lock led the SEC with 3,695 yards and a conference-record 43 passing touchdowns this past season. "He cares about his student-athletes and that's one of the most important attributes I look for in a coach". Shannon was the head coach at Miami from 2007-10 and was the Hurricanes' defensive coordinator for six seasons from 2001-06. Shannon took over as the Gators' interim coach right before Florida played Missouri this year after Jim McElwain was sacked.

UCF is also bringing in former Miami and Florida coach Randy Shannon as the defensive coordinator, according to Bruce Feldman.

After four seasons, he was relieved of duties alongside co-offensive coordinator Jay Norvell by then-head coach Bob Stoops. He could declare for the National Football League draft.

"Randy is someone who I have always had a great deal of respect for throughout the years", Heupel said.
