'Dozens injured' in German train collision

Fifty people were injured in a collision between two trains near Düsseldorf, Germany, on Tuesday night, federal police said.

A pair of trains crashed into one another near Dusseldorf, Germany on Tuesday, local media reported.

The accident happened at around 7:30pm near the station of Meerbusch-Osterath, state rail operator Deutsche Bahn said. National Express's first estimate of the number of injured was 20.

The initial estimates of injury were lower; Deutsche Bahn rail company, which operated the passenger train, first estimated only five people had been hurt, then raised the estimate to almost 50.

The railway has confirmed to German news outlets that a National Express train collided with a DB Cargo train.

Authorities said there were multiple injuries but did not immediately have more specific information.
