Man Charged in 2010 Murder of Former Grizzlies Center Lorenzen Wright

According to a document, Billy Turner, 46, was charged with first-degree murder and was indicted on Tuesday, being held on a $1 million bond.

One of the most infamous unsolved cases in Memphis sports history just took a step toward resolution. As you can imagine she was full of emotions when she found out an arrest was made.

Wright, a 6-foot-11 Memphis native, University of Memphis standout and 13-year professional player, was last heard from on July 19, 2010, during a 911 call to a dispatcher in Germantown, Tenn., shortly after midnight. It wasn't until last month that authorities confirmed they seized a gun believed to be used in the murder of Wright.

Wright averaged eight points and 6.4 rebounds per game while playing for five different National Basketball Association teams during his career from 1996 to 2009. Former NBA players and friends including Anfernee Hardaway and Elliot Perry attended a memorial service for Wright in the days after his body was found. Wright spent five seasons with the Grizzlies from 2001-06.

Meanwhile, spending on electricity, gas and other fuels went up 11.5 per cent and cigarettes and tobacco went up 11.1 per cent. But household consumption grew by just 0.1% in the quarter and is tracking weak growth levels not seen in nearly a decade.

Three sources said Turner worked at the Wright home and his mother was Wright's nanny.

Wright was out of the National Basketball Association and living in Atlanta at the time of his death but was visiting Memphis.

The next day police received a phone call from Wright's cellphone, but it was interrupted by gunfire, according to the D.A. Dispatchers acknowledged they heard noises like gunshots before the call was dropped.

Now it appears police may have finally cracked the case, and may be closer to finally being able to answer why Wright was killed more than seven years ago. "They said they found the murder weapon". That info was not given to the Memphis PD until several days later and authorities also failed to make a timely connection to the missing person report. Wright's playing weight was around 225 pounds.
