BSP fared poorly where paper ballots were used in UP civic polls

Yogi cracks first test as BJP sweeps civic polls

Samajwadi Party also raises doubts about EVMs

Pointing at possible EVM tampering in the Uttar Pradesh Civic Elections 2017, the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh said, "We say that BJP's winning percentage is 46% wherever polls were conducted via EVMs and 15% when it was done via ballot papers".

Contrary to the perception of a landslide win for BJP in the UP civic elections, the number of seats in which the party lost its deposit (3,656) was significantly higher than the number of seats it won (2,366). This can be termed better compared to the BSP's performance in Nagar Palika Parishad and Nagar Panchyat polls, where ballots were used, the data showed.

Samajwadi Party on Tuesday contested the claims of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of sweeping elections to urban local bodies by saying that the ruling party won only in nagar nigam (municipal corporations) and lost badly in the wards of nagar palika parishad and nagar panchayats as well as in polls for municipal chairpersons.

The proportion of candidates who lost deposits was even higher for SP, BSP and Congress at 54 per cent, 66 per cent and 75 per cent respectively. But in the 2006 polls, for instance, he SP had contest less than 40 per cent of nagar panchayat members seats and garnered 13 per cent of the vote.

A day after the civic polls results were released, Mayawati had challenged the BJP that the saffron party would lose the general elections due in 2019 if ballot papers were used instead of EVMs. "And I can say with full confidence that if the 2019 Lok Sabha polls are held by ballot paper, (the BJP) will not come to power", she said. Comparisons with the 2012 elections for these urban bodies are rendered meaningless by the fact that neither SP nor BSP contested the polls.

As per the election results, SP candidates forfeited deposits in 10 out of 16 seats.

Calling for ballot papers to be brought back, Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati on Saturday said that if EVMs are not used, BJP cannot come to power.
