Google kills Chrome Apps by shutting down the Chrome Web Store section

Chrome 63 Now Available for Android Linux Mac and Windows What's New

Chrome Apps are dead, as Google shuts down the Chrome Web Store section

"There are two types of Chrome apps: packaged apps and hosted apps", Google explained in a blog post from a year ago. While Chrome Apps have now disappeared from discovery, they can still be downloaded with a direct link.

Google followed through: Chrome browser users will no longer be able to access or install any apps from the Chrome Web Store. Additional enhancements to the Chrome apps platform will apply only to Chrome OS devices, including kiosks.

After announcing it past year, Google has finally removed the apps section from its Chrome Web store on Mac, Windows and Linux Platforms. These extensions, also available through the Chrome Web Store will be right where there were accessible from previously.

"Today, approximately 1% of users on Windows, Mac and Linux actively use Chrome packaged apps, and most hosted apps are already implemented as regular web apps".

Final vote on same sex marriage bill looms
But several lawmakers including Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull intend to persist with amendments rejected by the Senate. It's a YES! A final parliamentary vote on a bill to legalise same-sex marriage has passed.

Google told developers via email the Chrome team is working to enable Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) that can be installed on the desktop.

Google on Wednesday made good on its promise to rid of Chrome Apps. Chromebooks are already capable of running some Android apps and apps on the Chrome browser would seem redundant. PWAs aren't exactly a "standard" but are a catch-all phrase for a combination of existing W3C standards like a Web app manifest for app icons and service workers for push notifications and background updates.

The users who are just using Google's Chrome browser to browse the internet website will still be able to download themes and extension, according to the Google's statement. Because of this, other companies are jumping on the PWA bandwagon: it works on Samsung Android phones in the Samsung browser, Firefox on Android, and Opera on Android.

The web giant revealed in 2016 that it planned to phase out Chrome Apps in 2018. Google says it's planning to bring PWA desktop apps to Chrome sometime in mid-2018.
