Singapore will use and Boeing 777s on new service

"The additional service, along with a revision of current schedules, will shorten connection times and improve connectivity through the Singapore hub", SIA said.

Authorities have announced an investigation is underway after engine "abnormalities" on two separate Air New Zealand flights in the space of two days saw two flights forced to return to Auckland shortly after take-off.

The new service will operate daily during the peak months from October 28, 2018 to March 30, 2019, and then five times per week from March 31, 2019, to October 26, 2019.

"Under the alliance, Singapore Airlines has access to New Zealand's domestic, Australia and Pacific Islands network, and similarly Air New Zealand to over 50 destinations throughout Singapore Airlines' South East Asia, Europe and South Africa network", says Mr Tasker.

SIA will operate a mix of Airbus A380s and Boeing 777-300ERs, depending on the season.

Citing "two recent events", the carrier said on Thursday (7 December) that a number of Trent 1000 engines that powered its Boeing 787-9 fleet needed maintenance "sooner than previously advised" and confirmed flights would be cancelled or delayed every day for the forthcoming weeks.

Air New Zealand further noted that the United Kingdom group did not have spare engines available while the maintenance work was being undertaken, meaning it would be focused on finding replacement aircraft capacity. We are proud of the alliance's three destinations in New Zealand - Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington.

Rolls-Royce meanwhile told the newswire that it was working with Air New Zealand to minimise disruption and restore full flight operations as soon as possible.

The new service and revised flight schedules are subject to regulatory approvals, and tickets will be made available progressively through various distribution channels from Dec 8, 2017 onwards, said the airlines.
