Trump Jr invents a 'privilege' to avoid Russian Federation scandal questions

Don Jr. Cited Attorney-Client Privilege to Avoid Discussing Talks With His Dad

Donald Trump Jr. asked a Russian lawyer at the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting whether she had evidence of illegal donations to the Clinton Foundation, the lawyer told the Senate Judiciary Committee in answers to written questions obtained exclusively by NBC News.

At the closed-door meeting yesterday, Trump Jr. told House investigators that he spoke with White House Communications Director Hope Hicks to request help in crafting a response to the initial reports following news reports about the meeting at Trump Tower.

The emails from the publicist, Rob Goldstone, were discovered by congressional investigators and raised at Wednesday's classified hearing with Trump Jr., who said he could not recall the interactions, several sources said.

Scott Balber, the attorney for Kaveladze, confirms his client received the email but viewed it as odd because hacking was never discussed in the meeting and it was not consistent with what was discussed. Trump also allegedly demanded that his former FBI director drop the probe into former national security adviser Michael Flynn (who is now cooperating with the special counsel) and has publicly admitted to firing Comey over the Russian Federation probe, both of which appear created to impede investigations getting to the bottom of what happened.

In a statement to the Senate Judiciary Committee in September, Trump Jr said the meeting was less than half and hour long.

The Trump tycoon heir declined to elaborate on what he ultimately told him after the meeting became public.

"Attorneys for both the president and his son were on the call, which took place sometime after a July 8, 2017 New York Times story about the meeting, according to the people familiar with the matter", the Wall Street Journal reported. Another email from Goldstone to his client, Russian pop star Emin Agalarov, who also attended the meeting, mentioned the alleged Russian hack of DNC emails, and called it "eerily weird" after what they had discussed at Trump Tower.

The publicist is scheduled to speak with the House Intelligence Committee next week.

One of the most important events in the Trump-Russia scandal occurred at Trump Tower last summer.

Mr Trump Jr said that he had not told the president about the communications and that he views the group as an independent news organisation, United States media reported. "Merely having one in the room or on the phone does not automatically mean that anything that is said in that room or during that conversation is protected by the attorney-client privilege". Democrats reject Trump's privilege claim.

Erik Prince says he and Kirill Dmitriev of the Russian Direct Investment Fund had a 30-minute conversation in a hotel bar January 11 and discussed oil and commodity prices and how much Dmitriev wished trade relationships would improve. And Schiff told me he's concerned that if Trump Jr. continues to refuse to discuss this call, Republicans will not press the issue, to avoid determining what happened on it. The congressman said that Mr. Trump's lawyer, Alan S. Futerfas, asked the committee for more time to answer questions about that conversation because both he and a lawyer for the president were privy to it.

As Rangappa put it, "I think that what was really going on with Don that he was buying time".
