Cristiano Ronaldo Discusses Messi Rivalry After Ballon d'Or Win

Cristiano Ronaldo last night drew level with Lionel Messi for Ballon d'Or victories when he lifted his fifth award after firing Real Madrid to La Liga and Champions League glory.

After soaking up the ovation from his fans, the Portugal star went on to have his best performance in the league this season.

Real need more of the same from him over the coming weeks as they seek to defend their La Liga, Champions League and Club World Cup crowns with a mix of experienced heads and promising youngsters.

Zidane also hopes defender Raphael Varane will be fit for the tournament in the UAE, despite also missing the Sevilla match through injury.

But with Ronaldo and the forwards on song, Zinedine Zidane's bunch decided the match with five goals before halftime.

"I hope to play at this level for a few more years, I hope the battle with Messi continues, things happen for a reason", the 32-year-old Ronaldo said, going on to offer praise for Brazil's Neymar, who came third in the voting. A defensive mix-up between Simon Kjaer and Luis Muriel at a subsequent corner allowed Nacho to tuck in from close range.

Lomachenko: I knew Rigondeaux was going to say 'No Mas'
I am at 122.' It is on video on YouTube. "(What he said is) not the truth". Maybe they're big wins for the fans but not for me.

It is the fourth time in five years Ronaldo has beaten Messi to the prize. Ronaldo put the ball past goalkeeper Sergio Rico. Ronaldo had a first penalty shot denied but got his spot-kick after Jesus Navas handled the ball, and he calmly converted from the spot himself. That is in stark contrast to his league form, where he has scored just twice.

Up 3-0, Madrid poured forward and after Rico saved strikes by Luka Modric and Ronaldo he could not deny Toni Kroos when he worked a one-two passing combination on the break with Lucas Vazquez.

Nearly a goal made in Los Merengues' youth academy saw Marcos Llorente volley Achraf's chipped cross just wide, before Rico managed to smother the right-back's one-on-one in the nick of time.

"Trophies help win these awards and we have to thank my colleagues from Madrid and Portugal, it was very important for me".

"We will see - they will travel with us", he said.
