A superb free-kick from Cristiano Ronaldo broke the deadlock after 53 minutes, the five-time Ballon d'Or victor clipping the ball over the wall and into the bottom corner.

It was Ronaldo's fourth goal in three Club World Cup finals and extended his record of scoring in significant finals for Real Madrid, having also hit three goals in three Champions League finals and two goals in two Copa del Rey finals.

"The numbers speak for themselves", added the Portuguese.

Zinedine Zidane's side claimed their fifth trophy of 2017 when they defeated Brazilian club Gremio 1-0 to win the FIFA Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. "The team played fantastically well and it has won another title", Ronaldo said.

"I remain very motivated to keep winning things at a collective and individual level".

Madrid equaled Barcelona's record of three titles for the short knockout tournament between the champions of FIFA's six continental confederations and the host nation's league victor.

One example of how seriously this game is taken is when Luis Figo returned to the Nou Camp after signing for Real Madrid someone threw a pig's head at him when taking a corner.
