President Donald directed his White House counsel to tell attorney general to not recuse himself from the justice department's investigation into potential ties between and the Trump campaign, according to a person familiar with the matter. He said there had been "no collusion" and "no crime". Trump's lawyers have previously stated their determination to cooperate with Mueller's requests.

Norway Prime Minister Erna Solberg, who appeared with Trump at the joint press conference, seemed to back away from a question about whether she was "laughing at the Russian Federation investigation".

Mr Flynn was charged after admitting making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about meetings with Russia's ambassador as part of a plea deal. Manafort and Gates pleaded not guilty to 12 counts including money laundering, tax fraud, failing to register as foreign agents, and conspiracy against the US.

Trump did not rule out the possibility of being questioned by Mueller when asked about it at a news conference Saturday. Certainly, I'll see what happens.
