Police said the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Jonathan Bennett who was wanted for a west Charlotte murder, ambushed officers around 10:45 p.m. outside the headquarters building, according to NBC affiliate WCNC.

The suspect, Jonathan Bennett, was reportedly shot and killed by police. Charlotte Fire Communications was just one local agency who wished the injured officer a speed recovery. "Unfortunately some people use that against us", Putney said, further stating that police officers have a "dangerous job". That officer was also transported to CMC-Main with non-life threatening injuries.
Officers at the scene then began loading the injured officer, who was shot in the leg, into a patrol vehicle.

Over the radio, another officer is heard urging responding officers to slow down. He was detained and taken to the Carolinas Medical Center-Main where he later died, according to Fox 46 Charlotte.
"I need additional units around the L.E.C., establish a perimeter", one officer said to dispatch. Officers said White was found dead with a gunshot wound. An Amber Alert was issued briefly, but around 5:30 p.m., police tweeted the child had been found safe. "Slow the traffic. Suspect is in custody".
When police shoot someone, two investigations begin as part of standard procedure. He's been charged in the past with assault on a female, communicating threats and misdemeanor larceny. The shooting will be investigated like any other shooting in Charlotte, and CMPD's Internal Affairs Bureau will also hold an internal investigation to see if officers followed department policy and procedures. Investigators said he later died at the hospital.
