Police said the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Jonathan Bennett who was wanted for a west Charlotte murder, ambushed officers around 10:45 p.m. outside the headquarters building, according to NBC affiliate WCNC.

CMPD Chief Kerr Putney speaks to reporters at 12:30am Friday outside of police headquarters uptown.

The suspect, Jonathan Bennett, was reportedly shot and killed by police. Charlotte Fire Communications was just one local agency who wished the injured officer a speed recovery. "Unfortunately some people use that against us", Putney said, further stating that police officers have a "dangerous job". That officer was also transported to CMC-Main with non-life threatening injuries.

Officers at the scene then began loading the injured officer, who was shot in the leg, into a patrol vehicle.

The shooting will be investigated like any other shooting in Charlotte, and CMPD's Internal Affairs Bureau will also hold an internal investigation to see if officers followed department policy and procedures. Investigators said he later died at the hospital.
