Armed robbers steal jewels worth $5.4 million from iconic Ritz Hotel in Paris

The jewels were in a bag dropped during the raid by one of the five men who carried out the heist. As the men fled the scene, one of them hit and slightly injured a pedestrian.

Three people were arrested after the heist on the chic Place Vendome in central Paris, but police said at least two others escaped after the Wednesday evening robbery.

Paris police have recovered some jewels stolen from the Ritz Hotel in a dramatic heist, but were still searching Thursday for two thieves and the rest of the missing luxury merchandise.

Three of the robbers were arrested at the hotel after being trapped inside when security staff locked the doors electronically, it emerged.

Police managed to arrest three of the thieves at the scene but two escaped using a motorcycle and vehicle.

A police team in charge of patrolling the square - home to some of Paris's top jewellers and watchmakers, as well as the justice ministry - was quickly on the scene.

The hotel, opened in 1898, has been owned by Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed - father of Diana's boyfriend Dodi Al-Fayed who was also killed in the crash - since 1979.

The Ritz Carlton in Paris was where Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed dined on 31 August 1997, shortly before they died in a auto crash.

A superior room at the hotel costs from £885 a night, while a "grand deluxe" room could set guests back £1,240.

Wednesday's robbery took place 18 months after the Ritz's palatial doors were re-opened to guests following almost four years of renovations and a massive fire.

Over the last few years police have kept a permanent presence in the area, but they have not deterred potential robbers. But thieves struck again in March 2016, when an estimated six million euros worth of jewels were stolen from luxury fashion brand Chopard by robbers who threatened employees with a gun and grenade.
