Indian data leak looks to have been an inside job

"There will be only one active and valid VID for an Aadhaar number at any given time", the UIDAI said in a statement, according to a report by news agency Indo-Asian News Service (IANS).

The spokesman said that most of the NRIs, PIOs and OCIs may not be eligible for the Aadhaar enrollment as per the Act.

Of course, there will be situations in which a Virtual ID is not sufficient for third parties' needs: An agency seeking to eliminate duplicate accounts, for example, would need actual Aadhaar ID numbers to do so.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court also raised concerns over homeless not getting benefits of the social welfare schemes in the absence of Aadhaar and asked how will they get them if they don't have a permanent address. By June 1, all these agencies have to fully migrate to the new system or risk losing their registration and fines.

The move aims to strengthen the privacy and security of Aadhaar data and comes amid heightened concerns around the collection and storage of personal and demographic data of individuals.

One new measure is the introduction of a "virtual ID" for every Aadhaar holder - a temporary 16-digit number that will be mapped to a user's Aadhaar number that will allow the individual in question to avoid furnishing his or her Aadhaar number at the time of authentication.

Recently a report has stated that, the UDAI is going to introduce the virtual ID and also limit the Know Your Customer (KYC) to prevent from Aadhar Data breech.

There will be no limit on generating the number of "Virtual ID" for a user.

"Aadhaar number holder can use the Virtual ID in lieu of Aadhaar number whenever authentication or KYC services are performed". They can give this Virtual ID to service providers along with fingerprints at the time of authentication.

The second safety net is "limited KYC", a mechanism which will regulate how Aadhaar details are stored in the databases of different agencies, such as banks or telecom companies.

The government authority in charge of India's billion-records-and-counting Aadhaar biometric identity database, the Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI), has suspended 5,000 officials from accessing the system.
