Oregon Ducks upset #11 Sun Devils in decisive fashion — ASU Men's Basketball

Oregon at No. 17 Arizona tops the Pac-12 this week

A Player's Preview: Oregon State

Payton Pritchard scored 18 points, including two on free throws with 13.8 seconds left, as visiting OR hold off No. 11 Arizona State 76-72 on Thursday night.

"Guard U" has some of the best guards in the country, but the No. 11 Arizona State Sun Devils do not have overwhelming size or athleticism with those guards and limited amounts of it elsewhere.

INJURY UPDATE: Oregon State junior center Gligorije Rakocevic is considered questionable with a right calf injury that has kept him out the past four games.

They've gone out and played well.

Coach Sean Miller hit a similar narrative, saying the Beavers are much better than their 116th spot in KenPom rankings, which is eighth-best of any team in the conference. On most possessions, they were struggling to get a clean look and create space, unlike the Ducks, who got it almost whenever they wanted.

He was previously the head coach at Xavier for five years. Tres Tinkle scored 18 points for Oregon State.

Allerik Freeman finished with 14 points for the short-handed Wolfpack (12-5, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who blew almost all of a 12-point lead with less than 90 seconds remaining but held on to claim their second home win over a Top 25 opponent in six nights after knocking off then-No. He was 6-of-12 with four 3-pointers for 21 points.

Kodi Justice had 21 points, Shannon Evans II 19 and Tra Holder finished with 14 for the Sun Devils.

Arizona (12-4, 2-1 Pac-12) is coming off an 80-77 loss at Colorado last Saturday that broke a nine-game win streak. Elijah Brown capped the run when he hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer that tied the game at 41.

How did OR get it done?

This sounds easy, but it's usually not because of the speed that defenses can recover.

Blue Jays, Donaldson avoid arbitration with record $23M deal
It should be noted that Bryce Harper's final year of arbitration was bought out by the Washington Nationals for $21.65 million last May.

The focus was Offense and passing the ball as well as Defensively working on Rebounding, which has been the theme for the Ducks since Altman joined the program.

The drive-and-kick resulted in a lot of open 3-pointers. The Beaves made 6 of 14 tries from beyond the arc.

When asked of where the game got away, Justice answered with the backboard.

"It was all of it, honestly". In that one, Arizona's Deandre Ayton put up 26 points.

"We didn't have enough guys playing well, to you know, win the game", Hurley said.

All those ASU free throws that kept them in the game came from OR fouls, which caused the Ducks to miss important players throughout certain portions of the game.

Turnovers ultimately did in OSU, who could not handle the trapping and aggressive defensive pressure that Arizona turned up in the second half.

OR had their best run in the 1st Half with 1:32 on the clock.

Oregon's senior forward Mikyle McIntosh is only 6-foot-7, making him shorter than the bigs for ASU, but his 240-pound frame was a problem for the lighter and younger ASU frontline. The two men combined for seven of the eight made 3-pointers for OR on the night.

"He used his physicality, he just crashed", Hurley said. OR worked on the inside and found ways to carve up the Sun Devils.
