American Red Cross reports blood shortages

The American Red Cross is continuing to provide aid to countless people impacted by fires this winter.

Scott said the only blood drives Scarborough has are the ones St. Maximilian-Kolbe Church on Black Point Road organizes three times a year and a small annual drive at Walgreens at Oak Hill.

Severe winter weather has had a tremendous impact on blood donations already this year, with more than 150 blood drives forced to cancel causing over 5,500 blood donations to go uncollected.

"The donors are here", Scott said of Scarborough.

Despite missing 18 games over that stretch because of injuries and suspensions, Bell has averaged 24.9 touches per game. There are no guarantees that the Steelers will get to the AFC Championship to face presumably the New England Patriots.

Scott said the goal of Suster's drive was to filled 78 or 79 donor slots and successfully collect 60 donations of blood. RapidPass can now be completed on mobile devices and through the Blood Donor App. "They can also print or email their pass".

Scott said 38 percent of the American population is eligible to give blood, but only 10 percent do. Donors should bring a photo identification, a Red Cross Donor Card or two other forms of identification. So, if you meet the requirements, please donate! "It's the blood on the shelves that helps save lives in an emergency, and that's why we're asking eligible individuals to make an appointment to give blood or platelets today".

"Even temporary disruptions to blood and platelet donations can diminish the availability for hospital patients", said Clifford Numark, senior vice president, Red Cross Blood Services.

"Last week's massive winter storm had a significant impact on our blood supply with blood drives cancelled from SC to ME", said Chris Hrouda, president, Red Cross Blood Services.
