Schiff outlines Republican efforts to block access to witnesses, documents in Russia probe

The assessment from the committee's top Democrat underscores the partisan impasse that has plagued the House investigation, with Nunes and House Republicans now focusing on investigating allegations of improper FBI conduct during the 2016 elections and over its Russia probe - while Democrats demand a deeper dive into whether there was any Trump campaign collusion with the Russians.

Trump, speaking alongside Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos in May after he fired James Comey as Federal Bureau of Investigation director, reacted to the appointment of a special counsel by saying, "Well, I respect the move but the entire thing has been a witch hunt".

During a sometimes tense briefing, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee-Sanders on Thursday accused Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Burbank and Sen.

Schiff said the committee has interviewed a total of 56 witnesses, less than half of the number of people interviewed by the Senate intelligence committee. Both Democrats and Republicans appear to have leaked details of witness interviews or developments in the investigation. The two Federal Bureau of Investigation officials, during the 2016 campaign, referred to Trump as an "idiot" and "d*uche" during the 2016 election and said that his victory was "terrifying", according to documents reviewed by CNN.

Shortly before the "control" tweet, Trump sent one labeling California Democratic Sen.

"President Trump makes this strategy manifest clear as day nearly every day on his Twitter feed".

An unidentified source told CNN that Trump Jr. and members of the Trump Organization were sent an email on September 4, 2016 with a link to documents stolen from the DNC. CNN reported the "bombshell" for hours before Trump Jr.'s attorney released a copy of the actual email.

Moreover, Schiff contended that Trump Jr. needs to provide more information after he declined to reveal to the panel the contents of a conversation he had with his father in 2016 after the Trump Tower meeting was initially revealed in The New York Times. That was a day after the stolen DNC documents had been released publicly.

Schiff addressed Sanders' comments during an interview with Jake Tapper on CNN.

CNN refused to identify its sources and has yet to explain what led it to publish the erroneous story. "The only exception I make is when people refuse to answer questions because I don't allow them to leave the room and say we cooperated fully", said Schiff. "Being attacked by the President's propagandist is a badge of honor that I'm proud to share with Senator Feinstein", he said in a statement.
